Stoner

Welcome to the Stoner House Website!

Welcome to Stoner! The green house was founded in 1974 and since then staff and girls have been dedicated to maintaining the Stoner House ethos. Within the house we encourage all girls to get involved in sports teams, informal concerts, quizzes and drama productions; there really is something for everyone! The sixth form House Captains and Prefects pride themselves on getting to know all members of the house and their roles within the house are allocated according to their own strengths. They lead by example in all areas and really give the younger members of the house someone to look up to.

Together with getting involved our main aim in Stoner is to have fun together and the friendly nature of the house encourages this. I am certainly proud of everything that the Stoner girls achieve and am thrilled to be part of the team!

From the House Captains

Within Stoner House, we pride ourselves to encourage participation from anyone and everyone, and believe no one should feel unable to volunteer. We compete with enthusiasm, determination and are ambitious in everything we do.   Whether it be on the stage or the on the playing fields the Stoner spirit is carried with pride.

Stoner consists of some amazing athletes with great sporting talent, which helps us achieve great results in the inter-house sporting events. Additionally, the performers within Stoner shine on stage in both House music and drama competitions.

Throughout all house events, Stoner always has 100% devotion and commitment, which is displayed through all year groups. This is also carries through to academic work as we have consistently won or been placed highly in the termly Merit Cup.

History of Stoner House

Stoner House was founded in 1974, four years after the departure of Miss Celia Stoner who was Headmistress of St Catherine's from 1947 to 1970. In the thirty years that Stoner has been in existence, there have only been two Housemistresses, who have been accompanied by a host of enthusiastic assistant House staff, and who in their dedicated efforts have made the Housemistresses' role just that little bit easier.

In 1974, Miss Soper and a band of diligent prefects began Stoner House with the hopes that it would soon grow in co-operation and commitment. During her eighteen years of leadership, Stoner had grown into a community where it was the taking part that counted and was indeed much more highly valued than winning.

Many House' traditions were established during Miss Soper's leadership. The Merit Cup, for instance, is awarded to the House with the most merit points. One other idea that was created was the Stoner Wheel . This was a magazine, which was compiled by the girls of the House, detailing events. Begun in the late seventies, the last edition was produced in the early eighties. The annual House outing is another major event, established during Miss Soper's time, usually to the theatre in London to see a top rate show. More often than not this is a twice yearly event these days.

Sadly, in 1993 Miss Soper stepped down but her place was taken by Mrs Banks. The prefects at the time were as zealous as their predecessors and created a welcoming atmosphere for her.

The enthusiasm of the girls continued and is still continuing today. The main ethos of Stoner House, which is always emphasised by Mrs Banks and the prefects, is that House competitions are open to everyone. All the girls are encouraged to have a go, regardless of the challenge.

After asking just a selection of girls what Stoner meant to them, the response was exceedingly positive.

  • Helpful staff who are clearly dedicated to their job.
  • Working together as a team is all important.
  • Everyone knows everyone else, so working as a team is made easier by this.
  • It is lovely to be included in such a friendly atmosphere.
  • The prefects make me feel welcome in Stoner.
  • Always made to feel as though I had something special to offer the House .

Stoner has its ups and downs like any House, but it is the corporate spirit that keeps the girls going at full tilt and this is no more clearly evident than in the generosity of the House and all the fund raising events for charity.
