St Catherine’s, founded in 1885, is one of the UK’s premier girls’ independent schools with an enviable reputation for the quality of its teaching, the strong House system, the broad extra-curricular provision and the calibre of students. St Catherine’s Preparatory and Senior School educates girls from 4+ through to the Sixth Form. We welcome day girls from 4+; girls may board from age 11. There are outstanding facilities on-site, affording both boarders and day girls across both schools an educational experience which is second to none.
In 2014 St Catherine’s topped the Surrey League tables for points per candidate at A Level. In 2015 over 90% of GCSE grades were A*/A with 25 girls achieving straight A* in every subject. Oxbridge candidates meet their offers and our Destination of Leavers data is always impressive with most girls choosing to go to prestigious Russell Group universities.
St Catherine’s is a happy school where there is a great deal of humour and fun. The girls are ambitious and develop qualities which prepare them to go out into the world as confident, independent learners. They enjoy high quality, stimulating teaching every day from the Prep School through to the Sixth Form. They feel deep loyalty to St Catherine’s and, of course, each other, fostered by a well-established and popular House system which underpins the whole school. The girls appreciate that they receive a privileged education which, in turn, encourages them to give back to society. Our alumnae gain fine degrees and professional qualifications but also steep themselves in pro bono work at their colleges and universities.
There has been major investment in new facilities with significant recent investment in adding to and improving the School’s infrastructure. This has entailed the construction of three major buildings on the Senior School site – the Anniversary Halls Performing Arts Auditorium/Theatre and Sports Hall complex in 2011, the dedicated Sixth Form Library in 2013 and, most recently, the refurbished Lecture Theatre and Foyer in 2015. There is a regular rolling programme of investment in IT and St Catherine’s is an iPad school. We also invest in bursaries, allowing girls from a wide socio-economic background to take advantage of an education at St Catherine’s.
We enjoy the patronage of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall whose great-great grandfather was one of the founders of the School.
St Catherine’s lies at the centre of the village of Bramley, 3 miles south of Guildford, in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: The Surrey Hills. Nearby Guildford is a beautiful, historic town with excellent road and rail links to London which can be reached in just 30 minutes and there is quick access by road or rail to Gatwick and Heathrow Airports. This part of the country is regularly ranked as one of the top 10 places in which to live, based on factors such as employment opportunities, the quality of education and health, access to leisure pursuits and open countryside.
Our recent inspection report
We were very proud of the findings of the inspectors from the Independent Schools Inspectorate in October 2016 who deemed the School to be excellent in all areas.
Perhaps the concluding remark sums up best of all what a St. Catherine’s education is all about:
By the time they leave school, they are able to think critically, have high aspirations and a self-belief that there are few things that they cannot achieve.
