Classics

Here at St Catherine’s, a thriving Classics Department offers Latin, Classical Greek and Classics (an exciting combination of Ancient History and Classical Civilisation). Classical subjects are some of the most broad subjects you can study as they encompass just about any area of Greco-Roman civilisation. In addition, studying the ancient languages is an enjoyable challenge and allows students to access some of the world’s most powerful and beautiful Literature. The Department has recently won two Good Schools Guides Awards for its results in Latin and Greek. We regularly send students to read Classics at some of the country’s most prestigious universities. They then enter a range of exciting careers.

Latin is compulsory for the first three years of the Senior School and we use the Cambridge Latin Course. We supplement its lively stories and clear grammatical explanations with rigorous material of our own. We also teach the Minimus course in the Prep. School. Both Latin and Greek are offered at GCSE level, Greek as a two-year accelerated course for really enthusiastic linguists. For AS “Classics”, students take modules in Greek and Roman History, Greek Tragedy and Greek Art and Architecture.
