Celebrating Hort-Eco-ltural Show

St Catherine’s Prep School realises the importance of keeping traditional crafts alive.   Girls have used their skills and creativity to enter our 2nd Hort-Eco-ltural show. It gives the girls an opportunity to practise a variety of creative skills which are becoming rarer in our technological society.

After the success of last year, many of the girls at St. Catherine’s have been busy planning their entries for the second Hort-Eco-ltural Show. The competition was open to all ages at the Prep School and includes opportunities for the girls to grow their own vegetables, arrange flowers, bake cakes and design artistic creations on an Eco theme. Mrs Cowx and Mrs Field, two of our Prep School teachers, wanted to promote the traditional skills of baking, knitting, sewing and gardening.

This year also sees the introduction of a new competition where the girls have been invited to design their own piece of ‘Eco bunting’. These stunning designs will be displayed around the Prep School Hall on the day to add to the festivities.

After the judging has taken place, there will be an opportunity for some of the items to be sold at the May Fair on Saturday, to raise funds for Christian Aid.

‘Miss Naomi Bartholomew said, ‘The show has provided the girls the opportunity to be truly creative and to develop skills which may become a hobby, passion or in some cases even future career.’

Katriona Field, the Prep School’s Eco Co-ordinator, said, ‘We are thrilled to see how many more girls have entered this event after last year’s success and look forward to the wonderful display of produce and artistic creations from our talented young girls.’

‘I think the Hort-Eco-ltural Show is really great because you get to create things that are reusing other materials. I’ve made a puppet from mummy’s sock and some buttons. I have also made chocolate biscuits that are gluten-free.’ Alice, aged 7.

‘I’ve entered the ‘Bake Off’ and the ‘Art Attack’ as I love baking and I have enjoyed creating my 3D Eco structure’. Skylar, aged 11.
